Youth Spiritual Formation & Leadership Development

Job Description
Job Objective: Responsible for the development, promotion, resourcing, and administration of programming for youth with an emphasis in discipleship for the Kansas and Western Missouri Division. Functions as communication hub for the Youth Department. This position provides youth ministry resources, training, and consulting as it relates to spiritual formation programming. The focus of this role is to support the internal assets in Search Institutes 40 Developmental Assets throughout the division and provide administrative support to the Divisional Youth and Candidates Secretary.

Essential Functions
Spiritual Formation Programming
• Resource, equip and manage discipleship programming (e.g., BOLD Corps Cadet Discipleship)
• Manage resources for Sunday School curriculum
• Procure Bible and The Salvation Army theology study resources for youth, teens, and young adults
• Oversee Bible classes and chapel times at summer camps
• Serve as the Boys & Girls Club liaison to ensure the spiritual component of the programming within our centers is met
• Work to ensure that the departments divisional events and program development meets the needs of the inner spiritual life for youth & young adults
• Work with the Divisional Youth Secretary to find special guests, Bible Study materials, devotional focus, etc. for divisional events and programs
• Prepare and maintain all territorial reporting for youth discipleship programs, databases for discipleship programs, and Youth Department statistics
• Maintain the inventory and supplies relative to youth discipleship programs

• Visit the local units regularly for the purpose of supporting various youth discipleship programs and encouraging the development of youth discipleship programs where they do not exist in the division
• Keep the Divisional Youth Secretary informed as to the mission effectiveness of youth discipleship programs at each local unit
• Lead and/or participate in the planning and implementation of Divisional Youth Department events and camps
• Manage and administer all Divisional Youth Department social media, creating original text and video content, managing posts, and responding to followers
• Prepare and distribute promotional materials for Divisional Youth Department events
• Coordinate registration for all Divisional Youth Department events
• Represent The Salvation Army, Kansas and Western Missouri Division, and Youth Department in local, divisional, territorial or national events and committees which are related to youth discipleship ministries as requested

Leadership Development
• Mentor and train youth ministry leaders in discipleship programs by providing assistance and resources, maintaining regular contact with them, and taking a personal interest in them and their ministry
• Provide trainings for local youth leaders with the focus of discipleship, mentoring, and spiritual formation in coordination with the Youth, Family, and Community Engagement Specialist
• Oversee territorial-level leadership initiatives (e.g., Good Soil Initiative)

Program Resource Management
• Manage general correspondence for the department
• Provide administrative support for various divisional events and camps, via camp management software
• Manage invoice processing

Additional Duties
• Represent The Salvation Army by carrying out the mission in all aspects of our services
• Assist in planning and organizing all special event coordinated by the KWM Youth Department
• Participate in set up, and clean- up from all divisional youth events
• Work with the Youth Department in all related duties as assigned
• This position has an essential role in fulfilling the full mission of the Salvation Army. As a result of the integral nature of this responsibility, engagement in a local unit youth programming and active membership in a Salvation Army Corps is preferred.
• Perform regular work duties at the Divisional Camp each summer and participate in Salvation Army camping ministry

Minimum Qualifications:

Education: bachelor’s degree preferred, significant related experience may be considered in lieu of a degree. Youth Ministries, Christian Education, Childhood Development, or a related field.

Experience: Three years’ experience in a related field; three years’ experience serving in The Salvation Army youth ministry programming preferred

Certifications/Licenses: None

• An ability to effectively and efficiently manage people, projects and budgets
• An understanding of the Biblical standards and ministry of The Salvation Army
• A desire and ability to work with young people and the ability to motivate and inspire people to see the importance of Youth programming in The Salvation Army
• Ability to operate basic office equipment
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills
• Ability to promote The Salvation Army through public speaking, written work and effectively work well with others
• Ability to work effectively with diverse populations in a sensitive and culturally appropriate manner

Supervisory Responsibility: Divisional Youth Ministry volunteers.

Physical Requirements: Include sitting, walking and standing for extended periods of time; bending, squatting, climbing, kneeling, and twisting; grasping, pushing, and pulling objects; reaching overhead; lifting up to 50 lbs. Reasonable accommodation may be made to enable individuals to perform the essential functions of this job.

• Must be willing to work at the Divisional Camp throughout the summer youth camping season and participate in other off-site Youth Department programs
• Represent children’s ministries programs throughout the KWM division and territorial events as directed by Divisional Youth Secretary
• Participate in special meeting in support of Jr. Soldiers, Discipleship (Orange), Vacation Bible School, and Divine Sunday Programs throughout the division as requested
• Responsible for six quarterly visits to the local units for annual consult involving Children’s ministry programs
• Fleet vehicle required for travel (provided by Divisional Headquarters)

Driving/Travel: This position requires an employee to drive. Employee must possess a valid driver’s license from the state in which you reside. Must be approved through The Salvation Army Fleet safety program to drive either a Salvation Army or personal vehicle on Salvation Army business. Some same-day or overnight travel may be required to attend seminars/ workshops/ camps as assigned (or as requested with approval).

Working Conditions: Work performed in a typical office environment that will require willingness and ability to work irregular and extended hours; position will require some weekend and evening work along with eight weeks of office relocation at Three Trails Camp. Must be willing to work at the Divisional Camp throughout the summer youth camping season and participate in other off-site Youth Department programs.
