Executive Director
Job Summary: The Executive Director leads and oversees all aspects of the ministry of Indian Lake Nazarene Camp (ILNC), which includes a community of about 195 leaseholder households, year-round retreat lodging and food service, hosting summer-camp programs for children and youth, an RV park, and recreational facilities. He or she works under the authority of the District Superintendent and closely with the ILNC Board to translate their overall direction into day-to-day policy and procedure, as well as in strategic planning and development. The Executive Director exercises responsible stewardship of an annual budget of approximately $900,000, implementing financial priorities set by the ILNC Board and growing the camp’s ministries. He or she also maintains strong relationships with the Michigan District Church of the Nazarene, its leaders, and its congregations.
Responsibilities and Duties: -Know and support the mission of ILNC: “Indian Lake Nazarene Camp: A sacred space to experience renewal, relationships and recreation.” -Create an environment that communicates the love of Jesus and his desire to redeem and transform people. -Build positive relationships--encouraging communication and problem-solving--with residents, guests, and team members. -Develop agenda for ILNC Board meetings in cooperation with its chair and report regularly to the Board regarding financial and missional performance. -Serve as an ex-officio, non-voting member of the ILNC Board. -Resource the ILNC Board with future planning thoughts and vision, taking into careful consideration the professional advice of ILNC staff. -Represent ILNC in legal matters where appropriate. -Represent ILNC as “Chief Enthusiasm Officer” to its board, the Michigan District, local congregations, other faith groups and organizations, and the local community. -Find equitable solutions to conflicts or concerns about leaseholder properties and leaseholder or guest conduct, referring such matters to the ILNC Board when necessary. -Manage the day-to-day operations and ministry of ILNC on behalf of the district. -Ensure maintenance of all applicable State of Michigan licensing requirements and compliance with law, state and federal guidelines, and best practices in all aspects of ILNC’s operations and ministry. -Oversee all staff, including approval of compensation and promotion, and ensure recruitment of paid and volunteer employees to appropriately staff camp facilities. -Supervise, mentor, and develop direct reports through regular performance reviews, staff meetings, and training and networking opportunities. -Ensure lease transfers are carried out according to ILNC Board policy and applicable laws, including proper vetting of new leaseholder candidates. -Liaise with local and state authorities regarding property, code, or zoning issues. -Oversee all building projects in cooperation with the Director of Operations. -Develop an annual budget, in cooperation with the ILNC Board Treasurer/Finance Team, for approval by the ILNC Camp Board, and review budget performance regularly with staff. -Take corrective action as needed to address budget overruns and overdue customer accounts. -Coordinate and lead fundraising strategy, including visits to local congregations. -Cooperate with Michigan District camp program staff to plan and execute summer-camp programs for children and youth. -Coordinate with Olivet Nazarene University administration and academic departments, as well as Michigan District camp program directors, to plan recruitment events for college summer staff. -Lead ILNC’s guest and food services by example, demonstrating an “it’s my pleasure” tone for customer service and working side-by-side with front-line staff when necessary.
Qualifications and Skills: -A testimony and lifestyle that gives evidence of a true experience of salvation by grace in Jesus Christ, and willingness to abide by the current ILNC Code of Christian Conduct. -Affirmation of the theology of Holiness and of the beliefs and practices of the Church of the Nazarene as stated in its Articles of Faith and the Covenant of Christian Conduct in the Manual of the Church of the Nazarene, and ability to sincerely promote them. -Bachelor’s degree. -Three to five years of work experience in Christian camping. -Demonstrated success as a leader, planner, and team builder. -Demonstrated proficiency in budgeting, financial management, and fundraising. -Excellent oral and written communication. -Cool under pressure. -Creative and flexible in approaching tasks. -Mature problem solver. -Experience demonstrated in the expectations of this job description. -Physical ability to lift 25-50 pounds and perform moderate physical labor continuously for two to four hours in temperatures up to 90 degrees. -Full-time residence on ILNC grounds is highly desirable; must reside full-time less than 15 minutes’ travel time from the grounds.
Work Schedule/Compensation: This position is a year-round, full-time, exempt salaried position with great fluctuation in work schedule, depending on the season. Weekend work, evening work, days exceeding twelve hours, and work weeks up to eighty hours will be required at times. -Compensation is commensurate with experience. -Eight ILNC-approved paid holidays per year. -Ten sick days per year. -Two personal days per year. -Two weeks paid vacation (accumulated 1.16 days per month), increased to 3 weeks after 3 years. Vacation days will be approved by the District Superintendent, and are not to be used during the summer camping season. -Ministry-provided smart phone and cellular service plan. -Additional time off to compensate for holidays and other overtime worked during the summer (May-August), with the understanding that ILNC is a ministry and expects its exempt staff to contribute some volunteer hours during especially busy weeks. -Housing allowance, to include costs of ILNC lease fees. -Insurance and other benefits are not provided by ILNC, but the total compensation will include amounts designated for legally-allowed salary and benefit options.
