Horse Program Specialist

Do ya like horses? Do you like other things like zip lines, archery, summer campers, shelter building, schools groups, getting thrown in a lake, and ummmmmm, HORSES! Then we've got a job for you. Camp Henry, a ministry of Westminster Presbyterian Church, is looking to add to our growing Program Team with a Horse Program Specialist. This person will have a focus on supporting our horse program but also get to be a part of program areas as well. This is a extended seasonal role that starts April 5th and goes until at least the end of October, with a possibility going beyond.

Program Specialists will provide leadership in one of our key program areas, including: Horses, Environmental Education, High Adventure, Team Building, and Aquatics. Camp Henry is a fun, positive, challenging, and exciting place to work, learn, and serve! Our spring and fall seasons are full of serving school groups, sports teams, youth groups, and retreat guests. Program Specialists will jump into program roles within our Summer Staff from June to August.

Job Description:
- Lead and facilitate equine experiences, including Equine Team Building, Trail Rides, Mini Trail Rides, Pony Rides, Wagon Rides, Arena Lessons, Catch and Groom, and additional educational experiences with the camp herd, while maintaining the safety of all guests, campers, and horses
- Collaborate with the Horse Program Coordinator, Wranglers, Junior Wranglers, and Frontier Counselors to develop and implement new ideas and improve horse programming for summer camp and year round groups
- Care for and help manage Camp Henry’s herd of 20 horses, including seasonal training, hoof picking, grooming, mucking stalls, and deworming
- Assist with general maintenance of program resources (cleaning tack, feeding the herd, etc.)
- Provide outstanding guest services for year round guests, visiting group partners, and campers
- Maintain a positive, solutions-oriented attitude as challenges arise
- Other duties as assigned, which support Camp Henry’s mission and team, including serving alongside other department staff and facilitating activities in camp’s other key program areas, including Environmental Education, Outdoor Education, Team Building, Aquatics, and High Adventure

All applicants must possess a valid driver’s license and be able to pass a criminal background check. Position Requirements Include:
- Previous riding experience at various gates and experience teaching children at varying riding levels
- Knowledge of horses, horse behavior, and tack and ability to teach concepts and skills to campers and guests
- Ability and/or willingness to learn to drive the wagon with Camp Henry’s draft team
- Ability to work both independently and as part of a team
- Experience working with children and adapting programs to various ages and developmental stages
- Capable of working long hours outdoors in typical and inclement weather
- Ability to lift upwards of 50 pounds (includes bags of feed, hay, saddles, etc.)
- Customer service-oriented, including the ability to continuously convey positivity and politeness
- Open to feedback and willing to be coached
- Effective communication and strong interpersonal skills
- Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends
- CPR/First Aid certification or ability to acquire
- Additional equine training and certifications desired
