Food Service Manager

WORK CONTEXT / BACKGROUND:
Black Lake Bible Camp and Conference Center (BLBC) was established in 1946. Its mission is be used by God to transform lives through Faith in Jesus Christ. BLBC is organized for the purpose of operating a Christian ministry through the providing of camping activities, conference facilities, and ministry programs. The programs provided by BLBC include spiritual education, Christian training, evangelism and missions.

PURPOSE OF POSITION:
A member of the Senior Staff Leadership Team, the Food Service Manager will be capable of preparing quality meals for groups of up to 450 people, managing a staff of up to 20 people, managing a Food Service budget, and promoting the spiritual and professional development of young people. The Food Service department is a critical component of Black Lake’s ministry to campers, guest groups, and summer staff, many of whom work at Black Lake Bible Camp as their first work experience.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES
ROLE DIMENSION / DESCRIPTION TIME SPENT

Leadership 15%
• Full engagement and commitment to the senior leadership team
• Demonstrate a servant leadership approach to direct report staff and their teams, by facilitating a supportive environment for spiritual formation of staff, and the internalization of BLBC’s Vision, Mission and Core Values.
• Manage all direct report staff, including: staff recruitment, orientation, ongoing management support, coaching, annual performance planning and appraisal. Support professional and personal development of these staff through on job coaching, identification of learning and training needs and opportunities.
• Develop and implement system for effective planning and delegation of all food service work

Management 60%
• Manage the Black Lake Bible Camp kitchen and dining hall
• Satisfy all requirements of applicable rules and laws for foodservice
• Plan all menus for Black Lake Bible Camp
• Manage pest control services
• Prepare food service budget
• Work with caretakers to maintain all kitchen equipment
• Maintain kitchen and dining room sanitation and professional atmosphere
• Create several new meals each season
• Communicate frequently with guests of all ages
• Plan for and accommodate guests with restricted diets including vegetarians and vegans, allergies of all types

Quality Assurance 15%
• Ensure that continuous improvement and efficiency are embedded into business processes
• Ensure Food is a consistent quality and periodically monitored to ensure this standard

External Partnering 5%
• Inventory and order all food and supplies for food service and equipment

General 5%
• Lead and support activities that will enrich and develop mutual growth in Christ
• Participate in professional development
• Perform any other tasks assigned by the Executive Director

No. Direct Report: 20
Positions Supervised: The Food Service Manager supervises a 20-member summer season high-school and college-aged staff. During the non-summer season there are approximately 4-8 people to supervise in the kitchen.

Knowledge & Skills Essential for this position
-Understand BLBC vision and mission
-Proven Food Service leadership
-Demonstrated ability to innovate, analyze and solve complex issues and create
solutions.
-Proven leadership, management, collaborative and organizational skills
-Proven track record of being a highly relational team player
-Strong English language skills – written and spoken
-Competent in the use of Microsoft Office computer programs including Word,
Excel and PowerPoint

Work Environment
-This role requires to work directly with the Executive Director.
-Working effectively in a team environment is essential.
-Team building skills and ability to work in under pressure.

Workflow: The actual hours and days might vary depending on the flow of guests. On a typical off-season week our groups arrive on Friday and depart early afternoon on Sunday. In the summer we are 7 days a week from mid-June through Labor Day.
