Summer Staff Counselor

Position: Counselor
Responsible to: Head Counselor & DYCS/DYS

Position Summary: The counselor is responsible for providing a fun and safe environment and guidance for the children attending camp. Additional responsibilities include, conducting cabin devotions, disciplinary action(s), resolving camper issues, clean cabin after each camp and being a spiritual influence to the campers in general.

• Personal relationship and commitment to Jesus Christ
• 18 years old and up
• Experience in providing childcare and supervision
• Ability to exercise confidentiality and disciplinary action
• Must love being with children
• Maintain a high standard of Christian personal living and behaviors

• Provide daily care, guidance, and supervision for 8-12 campers each week
• Responsible for safety, health, and program involvement of campers
• Lead in-cabin devotions nightly
• Maintain a positive environment in your cabin
• Exercise disciplinary action(s) appropriately. Corporal punishments are not permitted at any time or for any reason
• Support other program staff with events as needed
• Assist with camper registration and orientation
• Thoroughly clean personal and cabin at the end of each camp
• Attend and participate in Staff Orientation
• Attend all camp wide activities and staff meetings
• Assist in enforcing safety rules and regulations throughout the camp
• Maintain a notebook of “successful” and “improvements” ideas to be included in an “End of the Summer Brief” (must be completed before receiving the last check)
• Perform other duties as assigned by the Program Director and DYCS/DYS

PLEASE NOTE: Due to the particular nature of camp program in session, you may be asked to assist in duties not directly related to this specific job description. This is necessary for the smooth operation of the camp. Staff members are expected to comply with all reasonable requests

Physical Requirements: Ability to sit, walk, stand, bend, squat, climb, kneel and twist on an intermittent or continuous basis. Ability to grasp, push, pull, and reach overhead. Ability to operate telephone. Ability to lift up to 25 pounds, Ability to access and produce information from a computer, Ability to understand written information. Qualified individuals must be able to perform the essential duties of the position with or without accommodation. A qualified person with a disability may request a modification or adjustment to the job or work environment in order to meet the physical requirements of the position. The Salvation Army will attempt to satisfy requests as long as the accommodation needed is reasonable and no undue hardship would result.
